History

The gift shop was opened in 1951 when the present West Suburban Temple Har Zion building was built. It was located across from the sanctuary, in the closet where the tallitot are now stored. The gift shop was moved into its present home in 1996. In 2006, the gift shop was officially named The Phyllis Baren Gift Shop in honor of Phyllis Baren whose volunteer efforts made the gift shop what it is today.

Gift Shop Hours

We are open every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to Noon during the religious school year. Our staff is there to help you with your Judaic needs. The gift shop hours are extended during the weekday for Hanukkah and Passover. The Temple office staff is always happy to open the gift shop during weekday hours. We are closed on holidays and Shabbat.

Special Order

We are happy to order anything you have seen somewhere else or in a catalog. We have many catalogs to look through for that something special and we can place your order. We specialize in ordering tallitot for Bat and Bar Mitzvah from our many vendors. Call Joan Weiss at 708-692-1008 for an appointment to select a tallit for your Bat or Bar Mitzvah.

Volunteers

The Phyllis Baren Gift Shop is a volunteer operation. Volunteers are needed to staff the gift shop on Sunday mornings from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. as well as during Hanukkah, Passover and special events in the building. Volunteers will receive all the needed instructions and a reminder by email. Working in the gift shop is not only enjoyable but a rewarding experience. It is a great way to meet members of the congregation and an opportunity to help raise funds to offset Temple expenses. Thanks to our volunteers and customers, the Sisterhood this year donated money to the temple for use to fund the entire new WSTHZ website. Won’t you help us! Volunteer by contacting the Gift Shop Volunteer Coordinator, Fran Kravitz at wsthz.phyllis.baren.gift.shop@gmail.com or at 630-293-4122.
